Abstract

This research aimed at determining the effect of fiber treatment on acrylic resin properties. In addition to the determination of the best curing method used for heat and self cured resin in order to obtain optimum degree of conversion and mechanical properties.
E-glass fibers were used in this study due to its translucency , ease of bonding to the acrylic resin as well as their availability and low cost(54,61). Two different glass fiber treatments were used. Fibers were either treated with 3 methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane or treated with silane then followed by preimpregnation of the fibers using PMMA/MMA mixture with a ratio of 10: 8 by weight.
Both fiber treatments were used for the reinforcement of commercially available heat cured and self cured acrylic resin. Heat cured resin was cured in boiling water for 20, 25 and 30 minutes. Self cured resin was cured in a hot water bath of 60oC for 10 minutes.
The following properties were tested: degree of conversion, transverse strength, impact strength and water sorption.
Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) was conducted to determine the degree of conversion. FTIR absorption spectra of these samples were recorded using Nexus 670 FTIR spectrometer. The samples were powdered manually and intermittently to avoid excess heat. The powdered samples were mixed with potassium bromide (KBr). This mixture was then pressed using a special hydrolytic press with pressure 10 tons for 30 seconds, to obtain discs of 13 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness.
