Abstract This study was conducted on 100 patients with intracranial space occupying lesions, who were operated upon stereotactically in the period between January 2001 and December 2004 in neurosurgery department, Ain Shams University hospitals. The age of our patients ranged between 5 and 70 years. The peak incidence of our patients’ age were in 6th and 7th decades of life ( 54%). 65 cases ( 65%) were male and 35 cases were females. Stereotactic biopsies were done in 50% of cases. Stereotactic guided Craniotomy operations were done in 12% of cases. Stereotactic drainage procedures were performed in 30 patients. However, Stereotactic interstitial brachytherapy was done only in 8 cases. Stereotactic biopsy: In this study, 50 patients were subjected to stereotactic biopsy. The most suitable entry point is suggested to be the safest and nearest point to the target. The most commonly used approach was frontal in 44% of cases, then posterior parietal in 30% of cases. The entry point was parietal in 4cases, and occipital in 6cases and temporal in three cases. The number of specimens taken during single procedure ranged between 1and 5 samples. The biopsy track was usually performed to pass through the periphery and center of the lesions allowing us to obtain tissue samples from various pathological sites of the lesions. The length of the biopsy tracks ranged between 10mm and 35mm. The biopsy track was 15 - 25 |
