Abstract

The liver is a discrete organ and that many of its various functions interrelate to one another. This becomes particularly evident in clinical abnormalities of the liver because many of its functions are disturbed simultaneously in different combination, depending on the nature of the disorder.
The liver function can be assessed clinically and by laboratory investigations. The clinical assessment of the liver should include a complete history and physical examination with appropriate laboratory tests to identify subclinical abnormalities and to define the disease process at a higher level of resolution. Because of the multiple functions of the liver, no one test can be used alone. ”Batteries” of tests are therefore used in the assessment of patient with known or suspected liver disease as (plasma billirubin, aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, albumin concentration) they are simple to perform and are relatively inexpensive.
