Abstract Stroke is one of the most common causes of death in the world, and is the most common life threatening neurological disorder. Neurosurgeons are by history and by training uniquely suited to care for patients with cerebrovascular disorders. The understanding of cerebral and cerebrovascular anatomy, the normophysiology and pathophysiology, and clinical skills in the diagnosis of stroke are common to neurosurgeons, neurologists, and increasingly, emergency medical specialists. However, neurosurgeons have always been involved in the urgent treatment of cerebrovascular disorders and are generally familiar with mechanisms for the urgent management of patients in the emergency room. Importantly, neurosurgeons have the technical skill and clinical judgment to directly intervene in cerebrovascular disorders affecting the cental nervous system either by direct observation or by endovascular therapy. These is critical that neurosurgeons re-establish their role as stroke experts in the medical community. |
