Abstract

Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic tumors in women. Depending on their location, fibroids are divided into submucous which protrudes into uterine cavity, intramural found entirely within the uterine muscle layers, and subserosal, which protrudes outward from the serosal surface of the uterus.
Myomas are usually asymptomatic, but they may be associated with a variety of symptoms, which typically include bleeding abnormalities, pain, urinary frequency, constipation and reproductive problems.
Asymptomatic patients do not require treatment. Traditionally, surgery has been recommended as the primary treatment option for symptomatic fibroids. For women not planning future pregnancy, hysterectomy offers definite treatment. Those desiring future pregnancy have the options of myomectomy.
