Abstract

Based on a linguistic model drawn from the systems of narratology and stylistics, this study analyzed The English Patient in both in versions: the text by Michael Ondaatje and the film by Anthony Minghella. The purpose of the research was thus two fold: to present a stylistic model of narrative analysis, and to offer a detailed stylistic analysis of the narrative The English Patient. Distinction was made between narrative plot and narrative discourse. Then analyses of discourse elements: setting, temporal relationships (the arrangement of narrative chronology), characterization, and intertextuality were offered in detail. (Based on Bal 1997, and Simpson and Montgomery 1995)
In relation to every element of narrative discourse studied, comparisons were made between the text and film versions of The English Patient. The comparisons served two purposes: to bring out differences and similarities between the two versions as two narrative media and to further elucidate the understanding of the text version.
