Abstract

The area of study is located in the offshore Nile delta within the concession belonging to Belayim petroleum company to the North of Port Said city ,around 60 km inside the Mediterranean sea between lat 31° 31’ 00” - 32° 00’ 12” N and long 32° 00’ 00” -32° 32’ 00” E. There are a lot of studies done on Nile delta area discussing its structure, stratigraphy and sedimentation.
Miocene rocks at the area of study are represented by four formations arranged from older to younger as follow:
- The Tineh Formation (upper member) is Late Oligocene-Early Miocene
(Chattian- Burdigalian) in age. The upper boundary of the Tineh Formation
unconformably underlies the marly facies of the Qantara Formation. The
lower boundary of this formation at the study area is not detected as the
studied wells were stopped within the upper member of the Tineh
Formation. The Tineh Formation is composed of gray to dark gray shale
intercalated with some layers of sandstone with calcareous cement.
- The Qantara Formation is Early Miocene (Burdigalian -Langhian) in
age. The upper boundary unconformably underlies the shaley facies of the
Sidi Salem Formation. The lower boundary unconformably overlies the
shaley facies of the Tineh Formation. The Qantara Formation is composed
of marl, shale and very rare laminations of sandstones.
