Abstract

The breast is the most commonsite of cancer in women, the incidence being higher than that of all malignant neoplasms of the reproductive organs combined. Physician’s awareness of the problem of cancer of the breast, refinements of methods of inspecting and palpating the breast, educating women in self-examination, improvement in radiotherapy, and the use of more extensive surgical procedures have not produced material improvement in the survival rate of these patients in the past several decades. The improved prognosis is primarily a function of earlier detection, diagnesis and treatment. The aim of this work is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy as well as the sensitivity and specificity of pre-operative clinical examination soft tisrue mammography and fine needle aspiration cytology as prognostic procedures, on which the need for mastectomy could be determined safely. Fifty breast lumps were examined clinically, by mammography and cytology, with a histologic check - up following surgical biopsy. There were 26 malignant and 24 benign cases. The limited reliability of the individual methods is demonstrated, and it is shown that their combined use can improve the diagnosis. The accuracy of clinical examination, soft tissue mammography and fine needle Aspiration cytology in our study were 72 %, 80 %, 88 % respectively.
