Abstract

The most common risks of blood transfusion is translnission of viruses which can be transmitted by blood, like HBV,HCV,HIV,CMV and EBV.
However, this risk is now markedly decreased due to the increase in the sensitivity of the screening tests.
There is continuous enhancement in the measures to protect the blood supply fi’om the possibility of transfusion transmitted infection.
The prilnary Inode of HCV transmission is exposure to infected human blood via injection or unsafe blood transfusion. Also, HEV is a common cause of liver disease allover the world the virus is transmitted via blood and other body fluids. HBV is 100 times more infectious’ than HIV and can live in dried blood for more than a week. HIV infected patients suffer frOln decreased lymphocyte proliferation and decreased production of IL 12 aI}d IFN Y mv IS transmitted by sexual relations and transfusion of infected blood.
CMV and EBV are herpes viruses and rarely cause clinical manifestation as they usually cause latent infection. However, these viruses can be reactivated when the immune systein has been suppressed due to different reasons.
