Abstract Lyme disease was discovered as a medical entity in 1977 and considered as the commonest tick-borne infection in the world. The tick will pass Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of the disease, to the patient through biting. All stages of the tick can transmit the disease as the spirochetal causative agent is transmitted transovarially to the offspring of the vector. Symptoms of the Lyme disease include, skin rash(erythema migrans), arthritis, general constitutional symptoms as fever, sweating, weight changes general weakness, cardiovascular symptoms, and neurological symptoms. These symptoms are similar to symptoms of many other diseases. Many reservoir hosts are reported all around the world and many species of ticks, mainly the hard ticks, are reported as vector of the disease. Our study aims to search for Lyme disease prevalence in Egypt through: -collection and classification of different genera and species of ticks from different villages in Giza government. -Examination of the tick gut tissue by direct film and culture for presence of Borrelia. -Examination of human sera by ELISA test searching for Borrelia burgdorferi binding-IgG. We found Borrelia in different genera and species of the collected ticks by direct film and culture but all human sera examined in our work by ELISA test were negative for Borrelia burgdorferi binding-IgG. |
