Abstract

Impaired glucose tolerance and overt diabetes mellitus were found to be two to four times more common in patients with chronic liver disease particularly cirrhosis compared to the general population. This association between chronic liver disease and abnormality of glucose metabolism has been recognized for over 20 years. HCV infection is one of the most important causes of chronic liver disease worldwide. Several strands of evidence have suggested a possible link between HCV infection and an increased prevalence of diabetes over that anticipated in patients with chronic liver disease in general.
The aim of this work was to study the basal insulin level and autoantibodies against islet cell cytoplasmic antigens as glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies.
This work was carried on 45 patients, 15 patients each group: Group I: HCV related chronic liver disease with diabetes mellitus. Group II: HCV unrelated chronic liver disease with diabetes mellitus. Group III; HCV related chronic liver disease without diabetes mellitus. All patients were subjected to full history taking and thorough clinical examination and laboratory investigation including: • Complete blood picture, renal function tests and liver function tests.
