Abstract

Chronic autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP) is a relatively common haematologic disorder characterized by destructive thrombocytopenia. Although, AITP is a benign disease, there is an increased risk of morbidity and mortality in certain patients. On the other hand, most patients continue to have thrombocytopenia inspite of treatment. Current treatment of ITP is primarily empirical aimed at non specific immunosuppression or inhibition of reticulo-endothelial functions. Most therapies cause a temporarily increase in platelet count and patients suffer not only from the bleeding manifestations of the disease but also from the side effects of the long-term therapy especially steroids. More understanding of the pathophysiology of AITP, which is not completely clear till now, should help to create more solid basis for directing therapy in individual patients in the future .
The aim of the present work was to study the serum level of GM-CSF in chronic AITP patients and its correlation with clinical parameters and with the level of platelet auto-antibodies
