Abstract

Dealing with a patient with a blunt abdominal trauma requires understanding of the injury mechanism the common injury patterns and types of injuries identified with blunt trauma.

Early Identification of significant intra abdominal injuries is necessary for the successful management of blunt trauma, because delay in diagnosis can lead to significant morbidity and mortality.

A protocol using diagnostic peritoneal lavage as a screening test followed by abdominal CT if positive is a safe, efficient method of evaluating abdominal blunt trauma patients that minimizes the incidence of non-therapeutic celiotomies and missed injuries. More recently, abdominal sonography has become an alternative method to screen for hemo-peritoneum in blunt abdominal trauma. It has been shown to have advantages of both DPL and abdominal CT, but unlike abdominal CT, there is a risk of missing significant intra-abdominal injuries, and it requires trained personnel and specialized equipment.
