Abstract

In this study a conventional thermoplastic compound mask used in fixation of the patient’s head during the radiotherapy course was compared to an innovate acrylic device composed of an intra oral stent attached tightly to an extra oral mask using a knob and a screw. For the comparison, twelve patients were selected; each patient had head or neck tumor that diagnosed to be treated by radiation therapy of multiple treatment sessions. The head fixations of the first six patients were carried out using the conventional thermoplastic mask, while the other six patients’ head were fixed using the innovate acrylic device. For each patient of the two groups, three radiographs were taken at the beginning, the middle and at the end of the treatment course. The three radiographs had been accurately traced upon each other by using the AutoCAD program system to evaluate the movement of the skull between the three traced different radiographs to determine the movement occurred along different periods of the treatment course. The following conclusions were drawn from that research: The conventional thermoplastic compound mask is less accurate than the acrylic mask as the patient skull movement measured by the traced radiographs ranged between 3-5ml while the innovate acrylic mask movement ranged between 0.6-1 ml.
