Abstract

Preeclampsia is a common disorder of pregnancy and a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The precise mechanism of this disorder is not known, but the release of a factor(s) from the placental bed result in systemic endothelial cell damage may play a role. The endothelium releases a variety of agents, one of them is the
endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) which is a labile
. relaxing factor that also shows antithrombotic properties.
Recently, it has been proposed that EDRF could be nitric
oxide. Nitric oxide is a small lipophilic molecule that rapidly
.
diffuses out of its cell of origin into nearby target cells, where it binds to heme group of cytosolic guanylate cyclase and thereby causes enzyme activation with a resultant 50 -200-fold increase in the velocity of conversion guanosine triphosphate to cyclic guanosine monophosphate
