Abstract

My thesis explores the aggravated cultural dualism of being both black and American in America. In fact, the Afro-Americans had drastically suffered from this double conflicting and rather perplexing issue. It also unfolds the New Negros’ argument, which is reinforced through- out literature starting from the 60’s up till the 80’s. this is apparent in their search for their black cultural identify where the Blacks have explicitly been determined to approve and rejuvenate their uniqueness apart from their white counterparts.
Alice Walker as a prolific writer has set out to redefine herself first as a woman and a participant in the Afro- American literary canon. Second, as a didactic motivator whose prime role is to ascertain and encourage the quest for wholeness and freedom on the one hand and to foster stability and equilibrium within the black family structure on the other.
Obviously, these compelling and incontrovertible issues are thoroughly accomplished through Walker’s true and realistic representation of the Blacks’ defaulted lives within the American society.
