Abstract

Forty patients with prostatic outflow obstruction requiring surgery were included in the study .They were prospectively randomized into two equal groups. The first group was subjected to transurethral vaporesection of the prostate (TUVRP) and the second group to the standard transurethral resection (TURP)
Diagnostic evaluation included detailed urological history, physical examination including digital rectal examination, urinalysis, complete blood picture, serum electrolytes and creatinine. All patients underwent ultrasound of the urinary tract to rule out concomitant pathologic findings and to estimate the size of the prostate by transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)
Uroflowmetry was done for all patients. Symptomatic patients were considered for surgery if the AUASI was more than 10, the maximum flow rate was less than 15 ml/s
Standard transurethral resection equipment was used and prostatectomy was performed using cutting current settings of 120 Watt for the standard loop resection electrode and 203 to 208 Watt for the vapor-cut loop electrode
Intra-operative blood loss was estimated directly by colorimetric estimation of hemoglobin concentration in the irrigant fluid.
