Abstract The present study was carried out at the Department of General Surgery,’ Menoufiya University Hospital m the period from April 2002 -July 2003 on sixty patients diagnosed as benign nodular goiter. Clinical assessment of all the cases were performed including general and local examination. Preoperative investigations, including thyroid function testes and routine biochemistry, preoperative serum calcium and preoperative laryngoscopic examination of the vocal cords, and ultrasonography of the thyroid gland were performed to all patients whereas fine need aspiration biopsy was performed selectively. Patients with thyroiditis, thvroid cancer, Grave’s disease were excluded from the study. The patients were divided randomly into two groups (A&B) each consisted of thirty patients Standard subtotal thyroidectomy was done for one group of patients while the patients of the other group were treated by total thyroidectomy by using technique of capsular dissection.
