Abstract

Normal amniotic fluid volume has long been associated with fetal well-being whereas conversely, decreased aminiotic fluid has been associated with poor fetal outcome. Most studies suggest oligohydrammios as a marker for poor perinatal outcome in high risk pregnancy. In contrast is not clear whether oligohydrammios occurring at or near term without associated risk factors adverse affects pregnancy outcome.Evidence is mounting that isolated oligohydrammios at term is not marker for fetal compromise and doesn’t warrant intervention

Our study aimed to test whether isolated oligohydrammios in otherwise low risk normal pregnancy is associated with poor or adverse perinatal outcome. The study was carried out in the period from April 2001 to April 2002 at Assuit University Hospital Department of Obstetric and Gynecology. An informed consent was taken from 120 participating women in a prospective controlled clinical trail, classified into two groupa,60 women in each group ; the oligohydrammios group with an AFI?5 cm and a controlgroup with normal AFI. The inclusion criteria included pregnant women between 35-40 weeks gestation, singleton cephalic fetus,AFI?5 cm for the oligohydrammios group and AFI from 6-18 cm for the control group and reactive non –stress test and biophysical profile score at admission not less than 8. the exclusion criteria included for both groups: the presence of congenital anomalies , gestational before 35 weeks or after 40 weeks gestation, premature rupture of membranes, abruption 40 weeks gestation, premature rupture of membranes, abruption placenta and placenta previa, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy diabetes mellitus and non-reactive non-stress test or biophysical profile<8
