Abstract

This research was performed on 40 patients with Bell’s palsy
(having complete facial paralysis): Their ages ranged from 13 to 65
years old, 24 patients were females and 16 patients were males, 22
patients with affected right side and 18 patients with affected left
side.
After ensuring that those patients had a normal hearing by
doing both the clinical and audiological examinations, stapedial
reflex measurement was done’for each patient within the first week
of the palsy, where it is found that: The stapedial reflex preserved in
10 cases and lost (absent) in 30 cases.
It was found that: The patients whose stapedial reflex remained
preserved, had an early and complete recovery of their facial motor
function in less than 4 weeks and this indicates that the prognosis was
excellent for those patients.
In the patients whose stapedial reflex was lost (absent), the
following findings were seen:-
We found that: In patients less than 50 years old, the stapedial
reflex recovered early in less than 4 weeks, but in those more than
50 years old, the reflex recovered lately in more than 4 weeks and
this indicates the bad effect of elderly on the prognosis of Bell’s
palsy.
