Abstract A number of studies have quantified the association of IMT of the extra cranial carotid arteries and the status of generalized atherosclerosis. More recently, an association had been observed between atherosclerosis of common carotid artery and incidence of coronary artery disease. Carotid atherosclerosis has been showed to progress faster in individuals with adverse levels of coronary artery disease risk factors. We studied the IMT in hypertensive patients with and without coronary artery disease aiming to consider it as a marker for CAD. 70 subjects were included in this study, 25 hypertensive non ischemic patients, 25 hypertensive ischemic patients and 20 normal subjects as a control. All patients and control subjects underwent full clinical examination, biochemical profile, electrocardiography, exercise ECG and coronary angiography for certain indicated cases, echocardiography, and carotid duplex. |
