Abstract intrauterine growth retardation is defined as a birth weight less than the tenth percentile for the gestational age or a birth weight more than two standtrd deviations below the mean weight for gesrational age. This fetus itas a pathological decrease in the rate of growth which results in a fetus who does not achieve its inherent growth potential putting him at risk for increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. During normal pregnancy there is two waves of cytotrophoblastic migration resulting in vascular dilatation of the arteries of the placental bed which is vital for achieving adequate placentation and a normal uteroplacental blood flow. In pregnancies complicated by IUGR, the second wave of trophoblastic invasion does nct occur, the intrarnyornetrial segments of the spiral arteries do not dilate as pregnancy progress and maternal b[ood flow to the placenta is restricted - that may lead to asymmetric intrauterine growth retardation. |
