Abstract

Recurrent pregnancy loss is distressing problem for both the patient and physician. The magnitude of foetal wastage in human is considerable, approaching a loss of up to three quarters of fertilized ova and 15% of recognized clinical pregnancies (Poland et al., 1981).
The prevalence of recurrent spontaneous abortion is approximately 1% (Reece, 1984), which is higher than the expected probability of 0.3 - 0.4 % for a woman to have three consecutive abortions. This indicates that not only random but also some specific components must be involved in this type of reproductive failure.
Within the past few years, results of clinical and laboratory investigations have shown that unexplained pregnancy loss can be explained by immunological factors especially antiphospholipid antibodies like lupus anticoagulants LAC and anticardiolipin antibodies (McIntyre et al., 1986).
In this study, 37 cases with history of unexplained repeated abortions including 22 pregnants and 15 non-pregnants were investigated for lupus anticoagulants using four in vitro tests (activated partial thromboplastin time, Kaolin clotting time, Dried Russel-Viper-Venom test and tissue thromboplastin inhibition test).
A control group of 30 healthy females with normal obstetric history including 15 pregnants and 15 non-pregnants were similarly investigated.
