Abstract

Spinal cord injury is one of the most devastating accidents that man can incur and still survive.
In industrialized countries the incidence of traumatic spinal cord injury is approximately 30 per million population per year Men are affected five Umes more often than women. Half the injuries are due to motorvehicle accidents and one fourth are due to falls. The most prevalent ages for traumatic spinal cord injury are 15 through 34 years but such injury can occur any age group.
The spinal cord is a cylinder somewhat flattened from front to back whose lower end tapers into a cone. The spinal cord ends opposite the lower border of first lumbar vertebra. The dura matter ends opposite the second sacral vertebra. The flium terminale ends and anchored to the dorsum of the second coccygeal vertebra.
The spine is capable of rotation, extension, flexion and lateral motion, its important function is to protect the spinal cord and secondly to provide support for the trunk and appendages. Because vertebral motions are carried out at multiple joints, there is little vulnerability and functions are performed efficiently.
Ligaments are the major stabilizing component in the cervical spine and critical for spinal stability.
