Abstract In this study emryology anatomy and phisiology of the palate and the eustachian tube were discussed in normal conditions and in cases of cleft palate . The etiology and epidemiology of cleft palate were reviewed . This study also reviewed the most popular methods employed for cleft palate repair. Our research included twenty patients with cleft palate presented to the otorhinolaryngology and plastic surgery departments , Menoufia University hospitals between April 2001 and April 2004 . For each patient a detailed study was recorded in a sheet that covered the clinical examination (general and otorhinolaryngological ) , Audiometric ,Tympanometric , Laboratory and other investigations . As well as the photographic documentation pre and postoperatively. Cleft palate repair was done for our cases employing two different techniques : - Von Langenbeck palatioplasty . - Furlow palatoplasty. The age at which operative interference was performed in these patients ranged between 12 months to 6 years with a mean age of 14 months . Out of 20 cases , complete cleft palate was found in 10 cases (50%) , Cleft soft palate and hard palate up to the incisive foramen 5 cases (25%) and cleft soft palate only in 5 cases (25%) . |
