Abstract In the present work the effect of Cynara scolyrnus extract was irLvesttgated for possible protective effect on liver dys function induced experimentally or on acute viral hepatitis in man. I Experimental study A :- Effect of Cynara scolyrnus on D-galactosarnine induced hepatic dysfunction in rats: Galàctosamine intoxication was chosen to induce experimental hepatic dysfunction as it is potent and selective hepatotoxin, capable of inducing a specific set of histopathological changes similar to those produced in acute viral hepatitis in man. 56 rats of local strain weighing 100 —120 grams were utilized. Rats were classified into 3 groups. Group 1 and 2 consisted of 8 rats each, and were injected Intraperitoneally with equal volume of either saline or D—galactosamine (300 mg/kg) respectively. Group 3 consisted of 40 rats and was further subdivided into 5 equal subgroups Subgroups (a), (b) and (c) received saline or Cynara scolyrnus 100 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg respectively 24 and 4 hours before a |
