Abstract

The use of metallic comounds extensively in industry result in the generation of toxic waste. The major metal waste producing industries are metal coating, smelting and refining of non-ferrous metyals, paint, ink and associted, products, petroleum, refining, iron and steel manufacturing, photographic, production and developing, leather tanning, wood preserving and lettery manufacturing. Waste stream from each of these industries has unique characteristics and can contain dissolved metal salts, such as those of aluminum, arsenic, codmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, silver, mercury and zinc. Such metal salts can be accumulate in living plants and further enter the animal and human food the rouugh their water-soluble compounds. Its Is, therefore, necessary to remove the toxic metals from the waste stream before releasing the waste water into the envirinoment. Ionizing readiation was utilized for the reduction of certain metal ions to insoluble metal salts. In the present study, the removal of hieavy metal ions from wastewater using γ-radiation will be investigated for the cases of copper, nickel, zinck and iron ions. Parameter analysis include the effect of metal ions concentration, pH, temperature and irradiation dose. The maximum precipitation of the irradiated and unirradited metal ions will be measured in neutral, alkaline medium and the acidic media. Adsorption on different adsorbents : GAC, PAC, Amberlite IR-120 plus and Dowex-1 exchangers as well as the combined treatment of irradiation and adsdrption will be studied.
