Abstract SUMMARY AJIL CONCLUSION.30 insulin dependent diabetics and 10 healthy control.subjects were invest iguted for serum magnesium level. Ttie diabetics were subdivided into two groups, group A with diabetic retinopathy and group B with, normal fundus appearance,A statistically significant hypomagne semis WQG detected in diabetic group (1*32 mg/DL) ao compared to normal control (2.6 mg/DLj , (P < 0.005^<Such hypomagnesemia can not be attributed to changes in plasma albumin Level, aa there wag no statistical difference between plasma albumin of diabetics and healthy subjects. It may be related to hyper^lycemia which interferes with magnesium reabaorption in renal tubules. The diabetes waa uncontrolled in both diabetic groups, with markedly elevated random blood sugar level. The hypomagnesemia was more marked in gr^Lip A diabetics with rettnopathy as compared to group B diabetics without retinopathy, Rnd as both groups were strictly comparable in a^e, duration of diabotea, hyperglycaemia and glycosuria, ccnsequentiy we suggest hypomagnesemia as a possible risk factor for diabetic ret inopathy, |
