Abstract

The hepatitis G virus (HGV) or GB virus C (GBV- C) was discovered in 1995 as a putative agent of post-transfusion, non-A-E hepatitis. The establishment of an epidemiological association between HGV and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a major importance in the study of HCC carcinogenesis in different geographical locations. The present study was carried out with the aim to study the association and prevalence of HGV infection selected from HCC patients compared to control cases, both individually and along with other parenterally transmitted hepatitis viruses. We have recruited 100 HCC cases from the National Cancer Institute, Cairo, Egypt. A control group to the cases 100 was recruited from Kasr El-Aini hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University based on gender, age and residency. We reported that of the 100 HCC patients (7%) were confirmed to have HGV RNA, (9%) were positive for the HBsAg surface antigen, (83%) were positive for HCV RNA. Five percent (5%) of control subjects had HGV RNA. Seven of the HGV positive subjects showed co- infection with one or more additional virus as HCV and/or HBV. Overall our findings seem to indicate that HGV infections generally are asymptomatic, transient and self-limiting and the virus does not seem to show a very high prevalence among the Egyptian population. It could be suggested that possibly no association was found between HGV and HCC as a low prevalence of HGV among HCC patients were recorded.
