Abstract

Nowadays, the automobile has become our major source of mass transportation. Everything about our culture and society has developed around this necessary form of travel. However, along with this necessity comes the issue of pollution to the environment. Gasoline powered vehicles have contributed greatly to the impurity of our environment. Finding an alternative source of energy to power these transportation vehicles is an obvious way of solving this problem.
This thesis presents one of the most well known alternative fueled vehicles; Electric Vehicle (EV). Details about EV and the main important parts of it are also shown. Electric motor is one of the most important parts of EV; Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM) are receiving significant attention from industries in the last decade, they are extremely inexpensive, reliable and weigh less than other machines of comparable power outputs. All these features that distinct the SRM make it reliable to be chosen in EV, this really will happen if the disadvantages of this motor will be eliminated or minimized. Advantages, disadvantages of SRM and the improvement of the performance of this motor have been presented in this thesis. The simulation of SRM linear model is done based on building a package of the motor operating with two different converters using SIMULINK provided by MATLAB7.
