Abstract

compounds is a worldwide environmental problem. This study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of short-term exposure to cadmium and the inhibitory effect of ascorbic acid or vitamin C on cadmium toxicity on some physiological and biochemical aspects of the freshwater fish; Oreochromis niloticus. Three fish groups were exposed to 1/10 LC50 Cd, 1/10 LC50 + 500mg/L vitamin C, and 1/10 LC50 + 1000mg/L vitamin C respectively. Different blood parameters showed a decrease in the tested parameters in fishes exposed to cadmium than control group. The results revealed disturbances in blood constituents and bioaccumulation of cadmium in vital organs, and hence cadmium has a harmful effect on the growth rate, meat quality and blood physiology of Nile tilapia. However, fishes supplemented with vitamin C showed an improvement in the growth rate and meat quality and the other studied physiological and biochemical parameters were within the normal ranges.
Histological examination revealed clear damage of gills and liver of fishes exposed to cadmium. In comparison, the histological sections of the same studied organs of fishes supplemented with vitamin C showed that these organs were more or less normal.
