Abstract

Abstract
Due to the unreliable communication links and the handoff process, wireless (mobile) networks are vulnerable to problems such as high bit error rate, and frequent disconnections. Regular TCP was initially designed to be well tuned in wired networks. However, when considering wireless (mobile) networks problems, regular TCP will face other problems than that it was designed to solve in wired networks, congestion problems. This increases the need to enhance TCP so that it would be able to operate in the same manner as it did in wired networks. Snoop protocol was introduced to improve TCP performance over wireless networks.
In this research, a number of modifications were introduced to the OPNET simulation package. The aim has been to facilitate examining the performance of Regular TCP when used in conjunction with the Snoop protocol. After modifying the node and the process models of the OPNET, a number of scenarios are built and then performances were examined. Simulation results have shown that Snoop protocol significantly improves TCP performance by preventing the transport layer from reducing the congestion window size, hence alleviating the main problem encountered with Regular TCP when used over wireless networks.
