Abstract

PERFORMANCE OF LARGE INTERCONNECTED POWER SYSTEM USING EXTERNAL SYSTEM EQUIVALENCE
The subject of this thesis is performance of large interconnected power system using external system equivalence. For this purpose, a review study of existing equivalence techniques is given with detailed description of a suitable method, Radial Equivalent and Independent (REI).
The presented work suggests the transient stability analysis as an application for the static external system equivalents.
The proposed application contains two stages. The first stage concentrates on the proper choice of the external network that ensures sufficiently accurate results with simplified generator model transient stability analysis, by comparing the transient behavior of internal sub- network’s generators before and after external sub-network reduction
The second stage takes the static external system equivalent that was found in the first stage and applies it in transient stability analysis with more complicated generator model by addition the effect of damping torque and excitation system to the generator model.
First stage includes some important steps such as:
Define a certain factor, which describes how far the transient behaviors of the generators are coincident.
. Define another index, which determines the fault location that gives maximum error as a result of the system reduction, and hence confined the calculation to that fault location only. This of course saves a lot of time and computer burden.
. Determine the largest size of external sub network that can he reduced within certain degree of accuracy.
