Abstract The present study is concerned with the geological and geophysical s t u d i e s on the shallow subsurface sediments of Lake Timsah, Suez Canal area, Egypt. The s tudy helped to elucidate the surface and subsurface geological, geophysical and environment picture of Lake Timsah area. The following is a summary of the present work and conclusions : Lake Timsah, named a f t e r the ancient Arabs, is located between Km. 76.500 and Km. 82.000 of the Suez Canal, approximately limited by l a t i t u d e s 30•‹ 32’ and 30•‹ 36’ North and longitudes 32O 16’ and 32O 21’ E a s t , covering an area of 2 about 15.5 km . Lake Timsah was originated tectonicaly as being a part of the llClysmic Gulfv that represents the f i r s t phase of opening along the Red Sea - Suez R i f t during the Late Oligocene - Early Miocene period. Structural lineaments t h a t dis!c:ected the area of the Suez Canal have a numerous a f f e c t on the formation of Lake Timsah and the d i f i n i t i o n of its boundrries. |
