Abstract

The i n v e s t i g a t i o n s described i n t h i s t h e s i s concern molecular i n t e r a c t i o n s t h a t y i e l d charge t r a n s f e r complexes i n both the s o l i d s t a t e and i n s o l u t i o n . The molecular complexes formed between sove nitrocompounds w i t h dialkylated naphthalenes (1,3-dimethyl, l,a-dimethyl, 2,3-dimethyl and 2,6-dimethylnaphthalenel were s t u d i e d u s i n g UV, I R and NMR spectroscopy. The nature o f the i n t e r a c t i o n and the s t o i c h e i o m e t r i e s o f the r e l e v a n t comnlexes have been determined. It i s suggested t h a t t h e donors form 1:l comnlexes w i t h a l l the acceptors. However, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene i s capable o f forming both 1:l and 1:2 molecular complexes but o n l y w i t h a c i d i c acceptors. These f i n d i n g s are supported by MO c a l c u l a t i o n s . Also, c o n d u c t i v i t y measurements were c a r r i e d out on one of the s o l i d c h a r g e - t r a n s f e r complexes t o determine i t s e l e c t r i c a l p r o p e r t i e s . T h i s r e v e a l e d t h a t t h e r e l e v a n t s o l i d CT complexes has good semiconducting

I n s o l u t i o n , t h e s o l i d CT complexes d i s s o c i a t e and t h e complex species present t r a n s i e n t l y need not have the same s t o i c h e i o m e t r y as t h a t i n the s o l i d phase. The complexes present i n s o l u t i o n can be s t u d i e d u s i n g NMR spectroscopy. However, the use of t h i s technique t r a d i t i o n a l l y r e l i e s on procedures t h a t a r e s u b j e c t t o various problems. For example, it i s necessary t o assume the s t o i c h e i o m e t r y o f the complexes formed o r t o i n f e r it from the r e s u l t s o f the data processing methods a v a i l a b l e t o c a l c u l a t e K. The v a l i d i t y o f the l a t t e r has been challenged L1C’24). Also, t h e r e a r e problems associated w i t h the i n t e r p r e t a t i o n o f the measured chemical s h i f t s and the dependence o f these on the c o n d i t i o n s under which the experimental data are processed t o y i e l d parameters c h a r a c t e r i s t i c t o the complex. Consequently, it was decided t o devote p a r t o f the present t h e s i s t o r e s o l v i n g these fundamental problems.
