Abstract

This research was performed to study the specific activities of key enzymes of the anaerobic pathways and the kinetic properties of the two oxido-reductase enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase of cestode Cotugnia polyacantha and Killigrewia streptopelia. The two parasites inhabiting the intestinal of the wild bird S t r ep t op e l ia sengalensis aegyptiaca . The parasites of genus cotugnia inhabit the anterior part of the intestine and the parasites of genus killigrewia inhabit the posterior part. The present study assayed the Einbden- Meyerhof pathway, and the two different anaerobic pathways (PK and PEPCK pathways) by measuring specific activities of enqxnes . The enzymes are relatively fragile substances, with a tendency to undergo denaturation and inactivation under unsuitable conditians. Enzymes are found in nature in complex mixtures, usually, in cells which perhaps contain a handred or more different enzymes, and in order to study a given enzyme properly it must be purified. In some cases, it is true, it is possible by the use of sufficiently specific test methods to study enzymes while they are state and indeed the foundation of enzyme biochemistry were laid long before any pure enzymes had been obtained. But in most cases some of the other enzymes present will interfere, either by attacking the substrate so as to give side reactions, or by transforming the product.
