Abstract

Initial investigations have been carried out by examining the aerial photographs of the area between Wadi Feiran and El-Tor, southwest Sinai. A photogslogical map (scale 1:40,000) was constructed and both stratigraphic and structural data were checked in the field. Structural analysis of the mapped faults indicates the presence of five different sets of faults. These are: I- N35”W to N65”W with maximum a t N45OW. 2- E-W. 3- N15”W 4- N5”E 5- N35”E. I t seems that the N 45”-65” W fault subset and the NNE (Aqaba) fault set a r e right-lateral and left-lateral strike slip, respectively, and were formed during the early stages of rifting of the Gulf of Suez rift. The NNW (Clysmic) faults are normal faults which were formed during the rifting and bounded the rift and many of the fault blocks. The outcroping sedimentary rocks range in age from Cambrian t o recent. The Nubia Sandstone crop-out in the lower part of the succession and unconformably overlie the Precambrian basement rocks and underlie the proper Cenomanian shales. The Nubia Sandstone sequence consist of shale, marl, limestone and sandstone in the upper part of the section (Upper Nubia Sandstone, Nubia A). The Middle Nubia Sandstone (Nubia B) consist of marine shales, silty with thin interbedsof sandstone, with abundant t r a c e fossils. The Lower Nubia Sandstone (Nubia C) consists of marine t o deltaic and flwio -continental sandstones. Stratification, ripple marks, lamination, and intraformational conglomerates are prominent primary structures characterizing the Nubia Sandstone in the studied area.
