Abstract In this study sedimentological and paleontological studies had been done on the Dakhla Shale Formation. Four sections were measured from two areas. Three sections at Qena region and one section at El-Quseir district at Gebel El-Duwi.The sedimentlogical study on the Late Cretaceous / Early Tertiary boundary near Qena region, helped in clarifying the depositiontal history of the area. The X-ray diff~action analysis of the argillaceous rocks indicates that the clay fraction of the sediment (< 2 um) is dominated by kaolinit,@, smectite and to less extent by illitic clay minerals. Most of these clay minerals are believed to be originally formed as a result to chemical decomposition of feldspars and micas derived mainly from igneous and metamorphic rocks accessible to the area. |
