Abstract

Human prolactin is produced by lactotrophic cells of the anterior pituitary. PRL has mammotropic and luteolytic action during menarcheal years. During pregnancy circulating levels of PRL rise progressively reaching pear values at 38th 40th weeks, they are some tentimes higher than before pregnancy while fetal serum PRL is low before 30 weeks of gestation, then a striking increase takes place between 30th week and neer the full term its levels decrease within one week to about 30% of their values at the time of delivery. During pregnancy PRL has osmoregulatory function, role in maturation of fetal lung surfactant, development of breast for lactation and possible role in preeclampsia. In puerperium, it has a principle role in lactogenesis. The aim of this work was to study the prolactin levels in the serum of twenty pre-ectamptic women and the serum of their fetuses during delivery. And the level of prolactin in the serum of ten normatensive controls and their fetuses.
