Abstract

It is well known that ARF is one of the most common life threatening conditions met within the critical care unit. It affects patients of any age. Mechanical ventilation has been used to treat ARF since the portable ”iron lung” was introduced by Drinker and Show in 1929. The primary purpose of mechanical ventilation is the support of cardiopulmonary homeostasis. The use of mechanical ventilation is not without disadvantages. The aim of this work was to compare the effects of three mechanical ventilation patterns, continuous mandatoy ventilation (CMV) , high frequency positive pressure ventilation (HFPPV) and continuous mandatory ventilation plus PEEPlo cmH@ on hemodynarnics, lung mechanics and pulmonary gas exchange in cases of ARF. Also, the effect of SIMV and PSV was studied on tidal volume, frequency of breathing, peak airway pressure, mean airway pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, arterial oxygen tension, arterial carbon dioxide tension, heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure.
