Abstract
Oesophageal varices have been considered to be ltlost common cause of upper gastro-intestinal haelnorhage in Egypt.It represent up to more than half of’ patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and behind increased mortality among peasants during their active productive life.This study was carried out in Radiology and imaging department and endoscopy unit at Tanta University I-lospitals on 20 patients with oesophageal varices, 15 patients were bleeders admitted to hospital during attacks of haelnatemesis and emergency sclerotherapy was done to arrest the bleeding then long term injection sclerotherapy was done to eradicate all variceal columns and 5 patients were non bleeders presentixlg with gastro-intestinal symptoms of portal hypertension, proved to have oesophageal varices by radiological and endoscopic examlxmation and prophylactic sderotherapy was done to those patients to eradicate O.V. before it become a source of bleeding.The patients in this study were 17 males and 3 females and their ages ranged from 23 to 65 years.The aim of this work was to investigate variceal patients radiologically and endoscopically, and follow up of these patients after undergoing endoscopic injection sderotherapy (EIS) as a line of treatment radiologically and endoscopically for assessment of the efficacy as well as the complications of EIS.
