Abstract

This study included 116 biopsy cases of neoplastic lesions. of salivary glands, received at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University (from January (1979 to December 1988). Females were more affected than males in all benign tumors. In case of oncocytoma (4 cases), 2 cases were females, the other 2 were males (sex ratio 1:l). No sex predilection could be encountered in malignant tumors. The peak age incidence in benign tumors was the fifth decade for females, and the sixth decade for males while in malignant tumors, the males had a peak age incidence at the sixth decade and females at the seventh decade. The parotid gland was generally the commonest gland affected in benign tumors (85.7%) and in malignant tumors (43.75%), the submandibular gland then followed as it was the site of affection in 9.5% of benign tumors and 43.75% of malignant tumors. The minor salivary glands represented 4.8% of benign tumors and 12.5% of malignant tumors. The sublingual gland was not affected by any of the benign and malignant tumors in the present series. Applying the WHO classification of Thackray and Sobin ( 1 9 7 2 ) , neoplastic lesions of salivary glands were categorized into: (a) Adenomas which included; i. pleomorphic adenoma ( 4 0 . 5 % ) , and ii. monomorphic adenoma (59.5%); and ( b ) Carcinomas including; i. mucoepidermoid tumors (18.88), ii. acinic cell tumor (12.5%), iii. adenoid cystic carcinoma (43.7%) and iv. undifferentiated carcinoma (25%). Monomorphic adenoma was further subdivided into: (a) Adenolymphoma (92%); and ( b ) Oxyphyl adenoma ( 8 8 ) . from the data collected, it was found that adenolymphoma was the most frequent benign tumor followed by pleomorphic adenoma. Adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most frequent malignant tumor in the present study.
