Abstract Pregnancy induced hypertension P.I.H. is a syndrome peculair to human pregnancy. P.I.H. is called ”the disease of theories” as many theories have been advanced concerning its etiology. The most acceptable theories nowadays are the disturbances in the renin -- angiotensin -- aldosterone system. disseminated intravascular coagulation. and altered immunological reaction. Vasospasm is the basic pathopyysiology of the disease. The vascular constriction imposes a resistance to blood flow and accounts for the development of arterial hypertension. This vasospasm will also result in alteration in perfustion of many organs in the body. The most important organ which suffers from this vasospasm is the fetoplacental unit, which shows a two or three fold decrease in uteroplacental perfusion compared to the normal pregnant women. Also, most women with P.I.H. show an appreciable reduction in total blood volume compared to normal pregnant women. |
