Abstract This work was carried out in the farm of Kafr EI-Sheikh Faculty of Agriculture during the early summer season of 1992 ,& 1993, on cucumber plants. The main objective of this research was to study the effect of grafting cucumber plants onto Cucurbita ficifolia rootstock, and the possibility of using some soil substitutes, such as rice straw and peat moss, aiming to improve cucumber production, in plastic greenhouse under Kafr EI-Sheikh area conditions. The variety used was Celebrity F I hybrid (high female). The study included two grafting treatments (grafted and ungrafted plants), added to five cultivation substrate treatments. The substrates used were straw bales prepared in three positions (erected on the soil surface, half buried in the soil and completely buried in the soil)” in addition to peat moss bags and normal soil. The experiment was designed as split plot with four replications. Data were tested by analysis of variance. Duncan’s test was used for the comparisons among treatments means. The study included climate conditions, vegetative growth, growth attributes, chemical analysis (leaves), flowering, fruit yield and fruit characteristics. |
