Abstract

Two different experiments were conducted at the Experimental Fun of the Faculty of Agriculture, Tmta University at K=afr El-Sheikh during two successive seasons of 1972 - 1973 and 1973 - 1974, The first one concerned f o l i a r spray of marjoram with urea as a source of nitrogen, while the second was to study the most suitzble spacing between h i l l s and the be& density of p l a n t s per h i l l , In the second season of 1973 - 1974 another additional experiment of f o l i a r spray of marjoran with superphosphate was carried out t o study itf s effect on marjoram productivity. The results of the d.iff erent experiments can be summarized in the following : 1. Experiaent of urea f o l i a r sprqy : A, The sonth : 1- There was a hizhly significcmt increase in the fresh and dry weights of mnrjorm leaves per plant with increasing the level of nitrogen applied, 2- Applying one-half the amoun-b of I? to the soil and the other half by f o l i a r spray resulted i n the heaviest foliage fresh and dry weights per plant followed. by the method, of applyins a l l the N by folier spray and then the s o i l application of N method. 3- The highest level of N (97.8 kg. of urea per feddan) and by applying half the amount t o the soil md the other half by f o l i a r spray (0.6 % spray solution of urea + 0,2 % misrol) is recommended t o produce the heaviest fresh and dry weights per plant f o r both the two hwvests of 1973 and seasons. S, O i l percentages and t o t a l amount in c,c, par leaves of . a plant : 1- There was an increase in both the mean percentages and t o t a l mount in C.C. of o i l in the fresh and. dry leaves by increasing’the level of N applied. However, the differences in the t o t a l mounts were highly sigif icant, 2- Applying ons-half the amount of I9 t o the s o i l and the other half by foliar spray resulted in the highest percentages.3 and t o t a l amount in c .c, of o i l for fresh and dry leaves of a plant followed by the method of applying a11 the N by foliar spray and then the s o i l application of N method. 3- The moderate level of N (65.2 kg. of urea per feddan) and by applying half the mount t o the s o i l and the other half by f oliar spray a t 0-6 % solution of urea + 0,2 % misrorol is recom~ended t o obtain the highest percentage and t o t a l amount; i n c, c. of o i l f o r the fresh and. dry leaves of a pl,mt, C, Chemical composition of leaves per plcan$ : 1- There was an increase in both the percentages and t o t a l amounts in ingm. of N, P and K i n the leaves of a p1.an.t by increasing the N level applied. However, the differences in the t o t a l amounts due to nitrogen levels were highly significant. The exception to t h i s was the decrease i n the phosphorus percentages at the highest level of N applied (97,8 kg. of urea per f eddan), when compared with the moderate one (65.2 kg, of urea per feddan). 2- Applying one-half the N amount to the s o i l and the other half by f o l i a r spray, produced the hishest percentages and t o t a l amounts in mgm. of N, P and I( followed by the method of applying a11 the N by foliar spray and then the s o i l application of all N method. However, the differencgs i n the t o t a l amounts were highly signif icmt. 3- The highest t o t a l amounts in mgm. of both N and K were produced. froin the highest N l e v e l (97.8 kg. of urea per feddm) and by applying half t h e N amouxb t o the s o i l and the other half by f o l i a r spray, while in P it was from t h e moderate level of W (65.2 kg, of urea per feddan) and by the same method of applicxtion in both the first and t h e second hmv e s t s of 1973 and 1974 seasons.
