Abstract
Poultry l i t t e r contains a considerabla mount of nutrients , p a r t i c u l a r l y nitrogen. Sources of these nutrients are : poultry excreta, wasted feed from birds and shedf eathers, The bedding mat esisl , i n poul t ry liouse.s - , i ncasecontributes t o the nutrients of the l i t t e r . Poultry l i t t e r , which is presently used primarily as a f e r t i l i z e r , is a potential source of nitrogen f o r ruminants. A large amount of t h i s material is prodwed in the p o u l t r y producing s t a t e s . Rumerous research works have been carried out to evaluate its nutkitive value and its use in various types of r2,tions for muninmt species. BTost of the research work done on poultry litter has dealt mainly wit11 i t s use a9 a nitrogen source in ruminant rat ions and, iz some cases, as a roughage material . With the current gre& shortage in foodstuffs in Egypt, any material that has a p o t e n t i a l i t y for uce as a foodstuff, must be evaluated and its possliAr: cz~t_ri_bution in alleviating this shortage -needs to be ?,ssessed. The present experiments were therefore conducted to study the effect of poultry l i t t e r as a source of nitrogen in rations of 1s~bs on the gso.rritl1 rate ,digestion.
