Abstract It’s Known that ocsophagcal varices result from portal hypertension.(l)-Athough elevated portal pressure plays a major part in ihe development of oesophageal varices, other factors must also contribute to their rupture.2)The management of acute variceal bleeding remains controversial.^)- In experienced hands the most effective treatment appears to be sclerotherapy*4). But acute variceal bleeding is still associated with rebleeding O In some intensive care units, emmergency sclerotherapy is not available, consequently other measures should be used. Balloon lamponade which is effective in Controlling bleeding in 70-80% of patients. However repeated bleeding occurs in up to 50% of subjects,with a rather high complication rate of 10-25%.(5) |
