Abstract

Bacteremia refers to the presence of bacteria in the blood. This rarely occurs in normal individuals in the absence of manipulative procedures.nlf Bacteremias are classified as transient, intermittent, or continuous. Transient bacteremias may occur early in the course of many infections including pneumococcal pnueumonia, bacterial meningitis, urinary tract infection, or after manipulation of infected tissue or colonized mucosal surfaces (such as during surgical drainage of an abscess or during dental procedures). Activities of daily living, such as teeth brushing, also cause transient bactermias.
