Abstract

An epidemiological survey was conducted on patients taking amiodaronfe and sotalol LIS part of their medical management. The doses of drugs used , plasma amiodaronc and sotalol concentrations and electrocardiographs variables (QRS and QT intervals) were obtained and were compared between males and females . In recipients of mniodarone , the maximum aclual QT interval (QTa : 456.2 ± 36.7 ms females ; 441.5. ± 56.9 ms males ; P<0.0003 )and heart-rate-corrected QT interval ( QTc : 472.5 ± 13.7 ms females; 413.9 =H 24.4 ms males; P<0.0001) were longer in women than in men . maximum quinidinc-induccd QTc prolongation was observed 2 hours after quinidine and was significantly gieater in women than in men (females 33.3 ± 3.4 m.,, males 24.4 ± 2.5 ms; l’<0.04). It was found that the duration of cardiac repolarization is increased in women and also indicated that drugs that prolong rcpolarizntion have a more pronounced effect in women . the reduced cardiac sensitivity of men to drugs that delay repolarization may be modulated via androgens .
