Abstract The pituitary gland lies at the base of the skull and is housed within a bony structure called the sella turcica. Its weight in normal adult humans is about 500 mg.. 1- Acute Pituitary Failure( pituitary apoplexy): is a rare, life-threatening condition of sudden onset which is both difficult to diagnose and to treat. It occurs most often in patients with pituitary tumours but can occur when there is no pituitary gland tumour. 2- Sheehan’s syndrome: also known as postpartum hypopituitarism or postpartum pituitary necrosis is a rare complication of pregnancy, usually occurring after excessive blood loss. The presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation appears to be a factor in its development. 3- Adrenal Crisis: is a constellation of symptoms that indicate severe adrenal insufficiency. This may be the result of either previously undiagnosed Addison’s disease. Additionally, this situation may develop in those on long-term oral glucocorticoids who have suddenly ceased taking their medication. 4- Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH Secretion (SIADH): characterized by excessive release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH or vasopressin) from the posterior pituitary gland. Hyponatraemia is the commonest electrolyte disorder in (SIADH). |
